What is spam?
Spam
is electronic junk mail, or more generally any unsolicited e-mail. Real spam is generally e-mail
advertising for some product sent to a mailing list or newsgroup. In sum,
spamming is the abuse of electronic messaging systems to indiscriminately
send unsolicited bulk messages. Spamming today comprises some 80 to 85% of
all the email in the world.
There is some debate about the source of the term, but the generally
accepted version is that it comes from the Monty Python song, "Spam spam
spam spam, spam spam spam spam, lovely spam, wonderful spam". Like the song,
spam is an endless repetition of worthless text, and it drowns out all
conversations hence "SPAMming" the dialogue.
Anti-spam email filters
A combination of techniques are needed for a complete solution to the
spam problem, and each has trade-offs between incorrectly rejecting
legitimate e-mail and not rejecting all spam, and the associated costs in
time and effort. Anti-spam techniques can be broken into four broad
categories: those that require actions by individuals, those that can be
automated by the email administrator, those that can be automated by e-mail
senders and those employed by researchers and law enforcement officials.
Individual action can include techniques such as avoiding responding to spam
emails and disabling HTML in emails. Automated filters can block spam by
rejecting email from Internet sites known to send spam, analyzing the
content of email messages and weeding out those which resemble spam.
Increasingly, anti-spam efforts have required co-ordination between law
enforcement, researchers, major consumer financial service companies and
Internet service providers.
